When Should I See an Orthopaedic Surgeon?

OrthoInfo Podcast: Season 1, Episode 1

In this episode of the OrthoInfo podcast, Shariff K. Bishai DO, FAAOS, and Mary K. Mulcahey, MD, FAAOS, help people with musculoskeletal conditions and symptoms understand why and when to see an orthopaedic surgeon.

The co-hosts explain what an orthopaedic surgeon does (hint: more than just operate), the orthopaedic subspecialties, and the key differences between orthopaedic surgeons and other healthcare professionals who treat musculoskeletal issues.

Drs. Bishai and Mulcahey also talk about what to expect during your first appointment with an orthopaedic surgeon. They encourage patients to self-advocate and view their orthopaedic surgeon as a partner in care to ask questions if they don't understand something the doctor says, and even to seek a second opinion (if possible) if the doctor is not a good fit for them.

If you aren't sure whether to see an orthopaedic surgeon for your chronic pain, injury, or other issue, this episode can help address your concerns.

Hosts:  Shariff K. Bishai, DO, FAAOS, Shoulder & Sports Medicine Surgeon, Detroit Orthopaedic Institute, PLLC, and Mary K. Mulcahey, MD, FAAOS, Professor and Chief of Sports Medicine Surgery, Loyola University Medical Center
