How Does Menopause Affect Bone and Joint Health?

OrthoInfo Podcast: Season 1, Episode 5
In this episode, Mary Mulcahey, MD, FAAOS, and Jocelyn Wittstein, MD, FAAOS, will help listeners understand how the menopausal transition affects women's bone and joint health. They will talk about the musculoskeletal syndrome of menopause, which describes bone and joint issues — including frozen shoulder, loss of muscle mass, loss of bone density that can lead to osteoporosis, and early onset of osteoarthritis — related specifically to the sharp drop in estrogen during menopause. Dr. Wittstein will also advise midlife women on when to see a doctor for joint pain and how to self-advocate to ensure that their physical symptoms are treated holistically rather than as isolated structural issues.
Host: Mary K. Mulcahey, MD, FAAOS, Professor and Chief of Sports Medicine Surgery, Loyola University Medical Center, and Editor-in-Chief of OrthoInfo
Guest: Jocelyn Ross Wittstein, MD, FAAOS, Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Duke University School of Medicine
