Getting "Hip" to Joint Replacement Surgery

Recently, the Saturday Evening Post spoke with Joseph C. McCarthy, MD, of the AAOS Board of Directors, regarding an increasing number of American adults suffering from severe osteoarthritis and other debilitating conditions. These adults are increasingly undergoing joint replacement surgery.

In the article, Dr. McCarthy talked about:

  • Common reasons for hip replacement
  • What conditions contribute to deterioration of the hip joint
  • Whether certain sports exact a greater toll on hip joints
  • What advances in hip replacement technology and surgical technique have improved outcomes
  • What precautions people should take prior to a joint replacement surgery
  • How soon after surgery can a patient resume his or her normal routine
  • How people can prevent the need for hip replacement

Dr. McCarthy, who specializes in hip replacement surgery, is a clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine and staff orthopaedic surgeon at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston.
